How to Wash a King Comforter Without a Large Home Machine

A king-size comforter can be too bulky for a home washer even when the drum technically closes. Before taking it to a laundromat, check the item’s care instructions and make sure the dry comforter can move in the selected washer. Fill, stitching, shell fabric, and added features vary, so “king” alone does not determine the right method.

Start with the specific care instructions

Read the sewn-in label or the manufacturer’s care page for the exact product. Note whether machine washing is allowed, the wash temperature and cycle, bleach restrictions, and the approved drying method and temperature. If it says dry clean only, spot clean only, or gives a warning you cannot follow, do not put it in a washer based on advice for a different comforter.

Care instructions can differ even among down comforters. Before washing, remove a duvet cover if it is removable and check its own label. Look for open seams, loose trim, or damage that could worsen in the wash. Ask the maker or a cleaner about an item with an unclear label, delicate construction, or a care restriction.

Check the dry fit before choosing a washer

A large number on a machine does not by itself confirm that your comforter is a good fit. Put the dry item into the drum and check that it is not wedged tightly against the door or compressed into a solid bundle. It needs room to shift as the machine runs. If it cannot fit loosely, choose a larger machine or do not wash it there.

Wash only as the label allows

Keep the comforter by itself if its instructions or available drum space call for a separate load. If the comforter is damaged or the fill is escaping, ask for advice before washing.

Dry the fill, not just the outer fabric

Use only the method and temperature specified for that comforter. Check the filling and thick seams before stopping: the shell can feel dry while dense sections still hold moisture. Brooklinen’s instructions for its comforters call for low tumble drying until fully dry; The Company Store’s care directions differ by product and label. Do not assume either maker’s settings apply to your item.

If it is not dry after a cycle, follow the label before continuing. Do not put a damp, bulky comforter into a closet or bed. If the label prohibits machine drying or you cannot verify that it is fully dry, seek a suitable cleaning option instead.
